New Work: Hands and Hustle x Structube

This past February, I worked with Structube to create a short promotional video, highlighting their collaboration with Hands and Hustle. The video focused on Hands and Hustle creator Sabrina Smelko as she introduced her Structube favourites. The Ask: Create a lighthearted and fun branded film introducing Sabrina’s Structube collection. This campaign was launched just before Valentine’s day. Purpose: YouTube video advertising and website content. The Structube team is a fresh and fun group of professionals that love to think outside of the box. They were incredibly open to ideas, and really wanted to create something fun and memorable. I was given a lot of creative …

New Work: CAFH 25th Anniversary Highlight Video

I donated a highlight video to the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton. I spent some time with the CAFH team, as they created a commemorative photo, celebrating 25 years of service. The shoot brought us to Abbey Park High School, where the staff and students helped bring the project together.   The Ask: Create a short highlight film documenting this short event, capturing staff, students and volunteers as they interact. Purpose: Online promotion and social media posts. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Children’s Aid Foundation of Halton, staff and students of Abbey Park High School participated in the creation of …

New Gear. The Cinevate Duzi Slider.

I’m constantly looking for new gear that will help increase the quality of my videos. My newest tool is the Cinevate Duzi slider. This two foot slider will allow me to get into tighter areas and achieve a smooth slider shot. I’m also able to use the head from my Manfrotto monopod, or my Benro video tripod which allows me to quickly and efficiently use the slider with my quick release plates. This is a big step up from the almost four foot Sevenoak slider that I’ve been using. The Sevenoak produced some great shots, but I found that the …

Five Video Production Lessons I Learned In 2014

2014 was a great year for branching out, making new connections, and experimenting. It was a year of transition, and I learned a few lessons about delivering a consistent product.   If you want to produce consistent high-quality media, you need to cut out the noise and focus on your craft. Everyone will give you their two cents about how your business should be run and where each light stand should go, but this doesn’t mean they have a vision or plan for you. 2014 was a year of getting back to basics, and I think it has laid the groundwork for …

Behind the Scenes: John Leenders Creator – A Business Profile Video

The John Leenders project required a stripped down film kit on a quick production schedule. I worked within dusty workshops, cold conditions, and dark spaces. The following is a highlight of our gear, project background and more. Background The Ask: The John Leenders profile film was commissioned by our friends at Spin Design Solutions. Spin was working on a full brand project for John’s furniture business, and they wanted a short profile video to help promote the website and the gorgeous pieces that John creates. Purpose: Drive traffic to Johnleenders.com and introduce this unique new business online. John is a very interesting, intelligent and inspiring person. …

Behind The Scenes: Short Cinematic Sequence

If you’re a creative, self initiated projects are vital to your learning and growth, and they will provide you with the opportunity to try new things. A client will usually hire you for what they see in your portfolio. Receiving those emails and phone calls is always exciting, but after a while you may find yourself wishing that you had a new direction to offer, or a wider range of stylistic treatments. In order to achieve this, you might have to take some time out of your day to create something for yourself. This will give you the opportunity to create …

Behind The Scenes – Shooting In A Tight Location

Shooting real conversation, and facilitating authentic situations comes with challenges. People are often most comfortable in their own environment, which might come with some challenges. This week I have been shooting in a wide range of business and home locations. Sometimes the locations are tight, the lighting is a mess (or non-existent), and I have to work with a limited kit. In spite of this, I love a good challenge, and I feel that these situations can produce some of the best, and most intimate shots. Armed with one camera, a Manfrotto 561bhdv monopod, and one simple LED light (with a modifier), I captured …

Make A Great Video: No One Cares About Your Inventory

Don’t make a bad video! Throwing away your money and time on a poorly thought-out video is crazy. This is the first post in a series of ‘what not to do’ when making your corporate or business film. There are a whole bunch of ways that you can approach making a great video for your business – but I’m not going to focus on that. I’m going to tell you what NOT to do. When planning and creating a promotional video for your business you need to consider what your goals are and start working towards capturing that. One of …
